The South African Atlas/Denel Cheetah C represented the pinnacle of Mirage III derivatives, integrating technology from the IAI Kfir and boasting capabilities comparable to or exceeding those of an F-16C. The Cheetah C featured advanced avionics, a sophisticated navigation suite, and an enhanced ELTA pulse-doppler multi-mode radar. It was also equipped with a data link, an upgraded helmet-mounted sight, and an improved Atar 9K50 engine.
The Cheetah C served in the South African Air Force until it was replaced by the SAAB Gripen in 2008. Some Cheetahs continue to operate in the Ecuadorian Air Force, alongside former IAF Kfirs.
In 1995, one Cheetah was painted in a distinctive livery to participate in 2 vs 1 dogfights during airshows for the South African Air Force’s 75th Anniversary. This aircraft became a crowd favorite and has retained its unique livery. It is now displayed in the Air Force Museum.
